Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, following a recent attack on his convoy in Dera Ismail Khan, has once again called for the postponement of elections. During a press conference, he emphasised that equal opportunities should not be exclusive to just one political party, in an apparent reference to the former ruling party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). He said that the matter of level playing field is not exclusive to just one party and a peaceful environment should be ensured for all parties in both Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces. Highlighting the attacks on party workers in North and South Waziristan, Maulana Fazlur Rehman called for equitable opportunities in both aforementioned provinces. The JUI-F chief commented on the recent incident, stating that his convoy was targeted with bullets. “This is not about me whether I was there or not but it indicates the declining law and order situation,” he added. Expressing concerns about the security situation in both K-P and Balochistan, he questioned the feasibility of conducting an election campaign in such circumstances. While acknowledging the importance of elections as a constitutional requirement, Fazl also stressed the necessity of ensuring a peaceful environment for the electoral process. Proposing a slight delay in the election schedule for the sake of ensuring a peaceful environment, he voiced scepticism about the feasibility of holding the election under current conditions. Fazl called upon the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to consider these concerns, asserting that the existing situation may inadvertently pave the way for rigging. Rehman also addressed economic challenges, asserting that the country's economy was significantly damaged over the last four years. He claimed credit for bringing the country out of bankruptcy in the last 15 months and expressed concerns about the potential negative impact on international investments if the upcoming elections are marred by security issues or instability. He said that the international community and friendly countries have expressed hesitancy, stating that they are reluctant to invest in Pakistan again if the previous leadership returns. He criticised the founder of PTI, Imran Khan, considering him a threat to the survival and integrity of Pakistan. He also questioned the alleged double standards in legal proceedings, stating that if opponents of the PTI founder can be held accountable, Khan should also face similar scrutiny.
