Political and religious parties in Pakistan on Sunday condemned the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in United States and Israeli strikes, calling the act a violation of the United Nations Charter. The United States and Israel jointly launched strikes on Iran, dramatically escalating tensions in the Middle East. In the aftermath, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed—a development confirmed by Iranian state media. Iran responded by declaring 40 days of public mourning and seven days of national holidays, while also vowing revenge for the death of its supreme leader. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) issued a strong condemnation over the killing of Khamenei, following joint military strikes by the United States and Israel. In a statement released by its central media department, PTI said the killing constituted a grave violation of international law and warned that such actions risk further destabilising an already volatile region. It stressed that the sanctity of civilian life must be upheld, even amid conflict. At the same time, the party called on Iran to exercise restraint, citing what it described as reports of drones striking civilian residences and public areas in neighbouring Arab states. Any actions endangering non-combatants, it said, must stop immediately. The PTI also appealed to all states to refrain from providing support for what it termed aggression against Iran. Senior PTI leader Omar Ayub echoed the party’s stance in a social media post, termed the incident a “state-executed assassination” and raised questions about Pakistan’s diplomatic posture while demanding clarity from the federal government on recent international engagements. The United States and Israel have once again proved themselves to be terrorist states,” he said. He termed the attack a blatant violation of international law and the United Nations Charter, warning that disregard for global rules posed a serious threat to world peace. He also criticised any suggestion of regime change in Iran, calling it a move that amounted to trampling international law. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said it was a day of mourning for the Muslim Ummah, as well as for the people of Iran and Pakistan, following the martyrdom of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In a statement, Naqvi said every Pakistani shared the grief of the Iranian people over Khamenei’s death. “We stand with you. Citizens must not take the law into their own hands and should record their protest in a peaceful manner,” he said. He also inspected security arrangements in different parts of the capital. Power Minister Awais Leghari said the martyrdom of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had plunged not only Iran but the entire Muslim Ummah into grief. In a statement, Leghari said the people and government of Pakistan stood in complete sincerity with their Iranian brothers and sisters during this difficult time. “This sorrow is our shared sorrow,” he said. He urged citizens to express their emotions peacefully rather than taking the law into their own hands. “The state will ensure the protection of everyone,” he added. Religious scholar Allama Syed Shahenshah Hussain Naqvi issued a video message expressing grief over the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Commander Ali Khamenei, describing it as a moment of sorrow for the Muslim Ummah. In his address, he appealed to the people of Pakistan to remain peaceful amid rising tensions. He said Pakistan was currently facing instability due to what he termed global, and particularly Zionist, conspiracies. He added that alongside challenges at the country’s borders, the threat of terrorism was looming within the country. He urged citizens to maintain unity and avoid actions that could further destabilise the situation.
